Pearl of the Orient Tower

The Pearl of the Orient Tower is a 42-story high-rise residential skyscraper that towers over the Manila area with a height of 168 meters or 551 feet. It is one of the tallest buildings in the city and is owned by Philippine Estates Corporation and developed by Pearl of the Orient Realty & Development Corporation.

Inside this high-rise residential skyscraper are six floors allotted for parking spaces, five floors for offices and commercial purposes, thirty floors of residential units, and two penthouse floors. In the basement area, there are four underground levels for parking as well. The construction of Pearl of the Orient Tower started in 1999 and was completed and opened to the public in 2004. The floor area in this high-rise residential skyscraper is 1,350,870.76 square feet.

LOCATION

The Pearl of the Orient Tower is located at 1240 Roxas Boulevard corner Arquiza Street, Ermita Manila, right in front of the Embassy of the United States and fronting Manila Bay. Just a few blocks away are the Quirino Grandstand and the Robinsons Place Manila. Historical places like the Luneta Park and the walled city of Intramuros are also just a few minutes away from Pearl of the Orient Tower as well as the recently opened structure, the Manila Ocean Park. Other hotels around the area are the Hyatt Hotel and Casino Manila on Pedro Gil Street, Holiday Inn Manila Pavillon Hotel, and Manila Hotel. Moreover, the Hyatt Hotel and Casino Manila and the Holiday Inn Manila Pavillon Hotel both have a casino complex inside operated by Casino Filipino.

Also just a few minutes away from Pearl of the Orient Tower are the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Star City theme park, Manila Yacht Club, and the SM Mall of Asia.

DEVELOPER

The owner of Pearl of the Orient Tower is Philippine Estates Corporation. The building was designed by American architectural firm Nadel Architects, Inc. in cooperation with Filipino architectural firm, G & W Architects.  The structural design was created by Ove Arup & Partners and was reviewed by Arup along with F.C. Cebedo & Partners. The design team of Pearl of the Orient Tower was composed of M.A. Alix & Partners for the fire protection works and the NBF Water and Wastewater Services (now N.B. Franco Consulting Engineers) for the sanitary and plumbing works. Constech Management Group, on the other hand, handled the project and construction management. The developer of Pearl of the Orient Tower is Pearl of the Orient Realty and Development Corporation.

BUILDING FEATURES AND FACILITIES

Some of the building features and facilities of Pearl of the Orient Tower are: three high-speed elevators for the residential floors, two high-speed elevators for the office and commercial floors, and one high-speed service elevator that serves the whole building. Other features are video phone communicating system for residents, built-in CATV cable system, centralized air-conditioning system at commercial and office areas, telephone lines, individual mail boxes, and emergency power generator. In the roof deck, there is also a helicopter landing pad.

In the 13th floor of this high-rise residential skyscraper, there is the City Club which has recreational and leisure amenities like swimming pool, kiddie pool, game rooms, gym and fitness center, function rooms, health spa, a fine-dining restaurant, and business centers. There are also two lobby lounges in Pearl of the Orient Tower. The lobby on the left of this high-rise residential skyscraper is allotted for the residents while the lobby on the right are for people with offices inside the tower. In the lobby, there is a fountain with a giant ball spewing water as suggested by the Feng Shui consultants from Singapore and Hong Kong.

There are also ten levels allotted for parkingfour basement levels and the levels from the second to the seventh floor which could be used by tenants and their guests. In total, there are 350 residential units in Pearl of the Orient Tower ranging from studio units to three-bedroom units. The largest unit has a floor area of 150 to 170 square meters.

ISSUE

There had been some problems regarding the name of Pearl of the Orient Tower. The initial name of this high-rise residential skyscraper was Embassy Pointe Tower. However, there came a negative association with the word “embassy” because of the bombings that were happening worldwide during the buildings construction. At that time, there were various bombings happening all over the world, especially in embassies. So the developers changed the name of Embassy Pointe Tower to Pearl of the Orient Tower.
